Welcome back!
Dear Parents! I am SO Very excited to be back and teaching ONLY fifth grade! What a great year it is going to be! On curriculum night, August 22 @ 6:15 (prior to the general ed. curriculum night meeting), I will be holding a meeting for all those parents who would like to come and see specifically what we will be doing in our classroom. This is a great evening to look at our specific curriculum as well as address any questions or concerns you may have. This is a GREAT way to meet and greet each other. I would LOVE to have ALL of my parents attend. Students whose parents attend curriculum night in my classroom will be given a free homework pass so PLEASE come join us! Notices will go home in Friday folders reminding you of the date and time! Look forward to seeing you then!
My Summer News: This summer I enjoyed watching my son's baseball team travel to Cooperstown, NY, and then to PCB for a second place win in the World Series Tournament. After baseball settled down, my other son and I traveled to Honduras where we spent a week working on an orphanage as well as visiting multiple schools. The picture above is from our visit to one of the schools. During our visit, I got the opportunity to work with a great group of fourth grade students who wrote all of my students letters. We will begin corresponding back and forth with this school and am so excited about the opportunity to have our students communicating with students from another country. You can see some of their letters outside my classroom door!
This school year, I will do my best to update homework daily (if it is not updated, I am probably out). this is the best way to know what your child's homework is for the night. I will also update the calendar monthly with any upcoming schoolwide events, but always check your child's homeroom website for grade and classroom specific activities. Again, please plan on attending curriculum night on Thursday, August 22 @ 6:15 We are going to have a challenging and busy year and will need all parental involvement. If your child's IEP states that he/she needs an extra set of books, you must come into the office to pick them up. They will nt be sent home automatically. I look forward to a great year, and always feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns @ [email protected] or @ 678-714-5800.

Dear parents,
Since the new year began, I am in BIG need of basic addtional classroom supplies. I currently have no lined notebook paper, pencils, erasers, and glue sticks. If anyone could possibly help in bringing andditional supplies to the classroom, that would be VERY beneficial! Thanks everyone SO much!

October Updates 2012
Parents,
just an update...in order to assess a book's reading level to ensure your child is reading at his/her reading level, you can go to Scholastic.com and type in the title and/or author of the book and it will give you the reading level of the book. This is VERY beneficial to determine if your child is reading a book that is appropriate for him/her. Let me know if you have any questions! Thanks!
It is the beginning of fall and we have SO much more to cover! Cant wait! We are now in the nitty gritty of it all and everyone will be woring extra hard to get where we need to be! I look forward to our conferences this month as I have such wonderful news to share with each of you about the progress your child has been making! We have a furlough day scheduled for October 8th, and then immediately following that date, on October the ninth, our fifth graders will have a writing meeting in the evening for all parents. More information should be coming home in your child's Friday folder about this very important meeting. You will not want to miss it!. We also have additional ITBS testing the week of October 22-26, so please have your child here at school and ensure he/she has received plenty of sleep and a good breakfast! That about raps it up for October! Busy month, but it should be a fun one! See you soon!
August, 2012
Wow, Another busy summer, I hope you all had as much fun as we did! I enjoyed watching my son's baseball team win the championship at the summer tournament @ Ripken in Myrtle Beach, SC as well as an incredible family trip to Fredericksburg, Boston, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick (Bay of Fundy) and Baltimore. I sure do love to travel! Can't wait to hear all of the fun and exciting adventures your children enjoyed over the summer.
This school year, I will do my best to update homework daily (if it is not updated, I am probably out). I will also update the calendar monthly with any upcoming schoolwide events, but always check your child's homeroom website for grade and classroom specific activities. Please plan on attending curriculum night on Thursday, August 16 @ 6:15 as I plan on going over a lot of information with all of the parents. Students whose parents attend curriculum night will be given a free homework pass so PLEASE come join us! April
Hope everyone had an incredibly wonderful spring break! I know I did! Now it is time to get down to the nitty gritty! We have two weeks left before CRCT and we will spent a lot of time reviewing concepts learned previously. CRCT testing will begin April 23 and continue through April 27. Please continue to have your child practice their skills online. if you have any questions let me know!
April 27th will also be Ms. M's last day. We plan on having a goodbye celebration for her on that day. I know everyone has enjoyed having her, and she will be greatly missed! If you would like to bring in something special for her, this would be the date to do it!
Please note that over the next month, I will be having multiple meetings for my fifth graders. These meetings are in preparation for sixth grade, and while they are not extensively long, they do take me out of the classroom. This is a great way for fifth grade parents to be prepared for the following school year. Please also be aware that fifth grade students (along with fourth graders) have a multitude of activities and events coming up during the next month and a half. Please see your child's homeroom calendar in order to best determine the dates of these events.

March
Wow! I can not believe it is now March and the CRCT testing is right around the corner! Before we begin CRCT, though, we have to finish our interim testing which will be completed on March 9th for the entire school. The grades from the interim tests will NOT be in the 3rd nine weeks gradebook, but will instead appear on the fourth nine weeks grading. This change is due to the County moving up the dates of the end of the third nine weeks, and testing will not be completed in time to input these grades into the third nine weeks. As we begin the fourth nine weeks of school, please note the following AKS we will be covering for each grade level. Fourth grade LA will be covering fiction, fatasy and drama and the word study will include the following Greek and Latin roots (micro-, tele-, -arium, and terr). For math, they will cover reviewing for CRCT as well as sold figures and algebra. Fifth grade will begin their drama/response to literature/research unit and will cover the following Greek and Latin roots (hemi-, semi-, -ify, struct). In math, the fifth graders will review for CRCT and will also complete the Geometry unit, algebra unit and data analysis. There is a lot to cover this last nine weeks, and we will be extremely busy. Please look for additional math review to come home nightly. ALL of our students need to practice basic math problems nightly! Also, don't forget to have your child practice their review for the online CRCT nightly for all subjects! What a great benefit for everyone!
This month, there are also a lot of exciting events happening. Please keep up with your child's homeroom scheduled events, but here is a list of a few of the events:
Please note not all of the events are posted!

HAPPY NEW YEAR and welcome back!
Hope everyone had a wonderful break and is ready to get back into the swing of things! We have gotten off to a great start this year, and I look forward to watching more progress over the new year. First, I would like to share with you that I will be having a student teacher over the next nine weeks. Her name is Caitlin McHargue and will begin working in my classroom on January 8th. She is hoping to come meet everyone sometime at the end of the week! I am excited about her coming and look forward to getting a LOT accomplished.
I have already begun midyear reading assessments in LA and am observing some INCREDIBLE improvements in reading levels! We have a lot of new and exciting things we will be accomplishing this nine weeks! Fourth grade will begin reading the novel The Whipping Boy while fifth grade will begin Hatchet. We will also begin new reader's theaters as well. Please note that students will now be responsible for five no excuse spelling words every two weeks, and these words will be included on the word study test every two weeks. The new words will be listed in the homework section and should be studied at home daily. Writing genres this nine weeks include persuasive and poetry for fourth grade and informational writing for fifth grade. Both grades will be creating "Wanted" posters during the nine weeks in order to incorporate both the informational and persuasive piece of writing into the posters. More information about this will come home when the project is assigned. We will also continue our small guided reading groups daily in language arts.
In Math, we are completing one more week of fraction review for fifth graders and then will begin geometry for both grades. Fourth graders will only have three weeks of geometry and then will begin place value, decimals and fractions. Fifth graders will also include measurement and will incorporate many geometry formulas into the measurement unit! BOTH grades will continue to work on their basic computation skills as well as daily word problems. Homework will be assigned each night, so look for it listed in the homework section of my website (OR within your child's agenda!).
I look forward to a great second half of the school year and am SO very proud of how well everyone is doing! Keep up the good work and PLEASE let me know if you have any questions or concerns! Do not hesitate to contact me and thhanks again for your support and assistance.

November
I am SO very excited about all of the improvements I have seen happening within my classroom! In LA, writing samples this month have been incredible! We have begun our novel studies with fourth grade reading Frindle and fifth grade reading Because of Winn Dixie. Both are fantastic books and we can't wait to read the next chapter. Fifth grade will begin their persuasive writing samples this month while foruth grade will be working on a Thanksgiving project. For math, we have been extremely busy working on our multiplication facts, especially fourth graders. PLEASE have your child practice their multiplication facts nightly. In order to continue on, he/she must know their facts. A great way to practice is to have your hcild spend time nightly on any of the great games linked to our school's website. They should be practicing nightly and can not learn this without constant practice and repetition. Fifth graders will begin long division with decimals and have already begun working on fractions (multiplication at this time). It should make for a very busy and exciting Novemenber. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns about our curriculum or what your child is doing. I hope that everyone has a blessed Holiday week (November 21-25). Please pay close attention to your child's general education calendar as there may be activities not listed in my calendar.

August
Summer is OVER!!!! Ready to get back to reading!
Summer visiting at the New River Gorge!
My family and I had a fantastic summer. My middle son and I traveled to Honduras on a mission trip and then we later went to PCB and then white water rafting on the New River in West Virginia. It was a great summer! Now we are back into the swing of things and have lots to do! This month the following things are on the calendar:
August 11-5 th grade curriculum night @ 6:45
August 18-4th grade curriculum night @ 6:45
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns @ 678-377-5672 or by email @ [email protected]
Also, if you need extra set of books, you must come into the office to pick them up (note went home last week). Unfortunately, fifth graders have to wait as they have run out of books and have to reorder them. You will get a letter home as soon as the books are available. Thanks!
